With 25 years of experience, Dr. Jacob is a Prosthodontist at the best dental hospital in Bangalore. His expertise lies in the fields of implantology, full mouth rehabilitation, and maxillofacial prosthodontics (rehabilitating oral cancer patients ). He is also part of the smile design team at Aster.

After completing his BDS from the College of Dental Surgery, Manipal and his Masters in Prosthodontics from Annamalai University, he completed a one-year Residency Program in Cert, In Maxillofacial Prosthetics(UCLA) Medical Center, California, USA, on an American Cancer Society fellowship.

During his residency, he worked closely with Dr. John Beumer III, an eminent Maxillofacial Prosthodontist and Implantologist. Since the Maxillofacial clinic at UCLA is also the Center for Implant Dentistry, he received training in this field as well.

He has published articles in journals like the Journal of Prosthodontics. Other than India, he has lectured and conducted courses in countries like Bahrain, Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka etc.

Dr Jacob is a key opinion leader for the 3M dental company and conducts training courses for dentists. He is an active member of the Indian prosthodontics society and has been a member of the executive council, Indian Dental association and International society of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation.

Title: The Role of Implants in the Rehabilitation of Maxillofacial Defects including complications

Maxillofacial Prosthodontics involves the rehabilitation of both congenital and acquired defects, which may be intraoral or extraoral.

Dental Implants have played a significant part in improving the quality of life of these unfortunate patients. In large maxillary or mandibular defects, the use of bone containing free flaps (Fibula) and implants and an overdenture prosthesis, have given them an excellent quality of life. At Mazumdar Shaw Medical center we have over 10 yrs of experience treating these patients. One of the biggest problems is the management of soft tissue around these implants , I will be speaking about our experience in detail and showing a few cases.

With regards to implants in extraoral cases, my experience is mainly in the auricular region and two cases in the orbital region. Again the main issue is the maintenance of soft tissue around the maxillofacial implants. I will be discussing on how we debulk the tissue , to get fixed tissue around these implants.

I hope that with my presentation I will to able to help convert some of the failures to success.

Hands-on Workshop

Title: The Planning , implant placement , fabrication of Overdentures and Implant assisted cast Partial dentures.

Implant retained overdentures and Cast partial dentures are an excellent method of rehabilitating patients ,especially in the elderly and in patients with maxillofacial defects in the maxilla and the mandible. The main advantages are 1. Cleaning is much easier as the prosthesis can be removed 2. If extensive soft tissue is to be replaced , its much better with an overdenture than a fixed prosthesis. The disadvantages 1. Some patient do not like removing their prostheses at night 2. The male components have to be changes when they get loose usually between 6-12 months.

Cast partial dentures are a fantastic way of rehabilitating a partially edentulous patient, however some patients don’t like the metallic clasps. Implants with overdenture abutments can help with this problem by eliminating the use of clasps.

This workshop will start with planning, implant placement , choosing the attachment to be used , and the prosthodontic steps involved in fabricating the overdenture. There will be a demo of picking up the male components from a model which has implants and the female part of the attachment, and doing the finishing of the denture.
